Lamp Tables came about when oil lamps were introduced. Candle lamp tables were normally 3-legged affairs. When the table was knocked over, the candle would extinquish. However, oil lamps would not and 3-legged tables were a hazard. Hence 4-legged tables for oil lamps. Today we'd call them end tables. Here's my version of a lamp table. I made a matching set in Walnut. The tops are one solid board 18" x 18". The planks are from a crotch flitch.

It's done. This wasn't my best job but I learned a lot doing it. It was a very educational project. I made several changes. For example, I used 3/8" overlap European style hinges (from Rockler) for the lower doors. The hinges that were recommended were way too flimsy and the doors sagged.
